Fibroids

This Fibroids Resource Center brings together Dr. Goldstein’s articles and videos to help women understand fibroid symptoms, diagnosis, imaging, bleeding and fertility concerns, treatment options, and when surgery may—or may not—be necessary. The goal is to help women understand their individual diagnosis and make better-informed decisions about their care.

Uterine fibroids are extremely common—but simply having fibroids does not mean they need to be treated. Dr. Steven R. Goldstein emphasizes that fibroids can vary enormously in their size, location and impact. As he describes it, fibroids are like fingerprints—no two are exactly alike—and, much like real estate, “location, location, location” can determine whether a fibroid causes significant bleeding, pressure, pain or fertility problems—or no symptoms at all.

Dr. Goldstein uses transvaginal ultrasound, including color Doppler and sonohysterography when appropriate, to determine which fibroids are clinically significant and which may simply require observation. He also stresses that true uterine fibroids are benign and do not become cancerous, an important distinction for women concerned after receiving a fibroid diagnosis
