Understanding Endometrial Biopsy: When Is It Really Necessary?

For decades, an endometrial biopsy has been one of the most commonly recommended procedures for women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding or bleeding after menopause. But according to Dr. Steven R. Goldstein, the more important question is not simply whether an endometrial biopsy can provide useful information. It is whether a blind biopsy should automatically be the first step in determining what is happening inside the uterus. This section provides the resources that aid in understanding endometrial biopsy.

Dr. Goldstein has spent much of his career challenging the routine use of blind endometrial sampling when modern gynecologic imaging may provide a more complete initial evaluation of the uterine cavity.

This Endometrial Biopsy Resource Center brings together Dr. Goldstein’s articles, videos and commentary on endometrial biopsy, abnormal uterine bleeding, postmenopausal bleeding, transvaginal ultrasound and the changing recommendations surrounding the evaluation of the endometrium.

For women who have been told they need an endometrial biopsy, these resources are intended to help them better understand the procedure, its limitations, the alternatives that may be available, and the questions they should discuss with their gynecologist before proceeding.
